The name of the village

"LALLA Takerkoust"

Comes from a Marabout woman recognized as holy by her kindness and the powers that were attributed to her, people came to pray and make offerings on her mausoleum, reputed to bring fertility to women in difficulty of procreation and her Zaouïa "mausoleum" was covered by the lake of the dam, the population is mainly Berber-speaking.

Today this name is given to the village and to a water point located upstream of the mountain, The legend says that the source is mentioned in the Koran in sura XVIII of the Cave which highlights the history of 7 sleepers.

Young Christians from Ephesus whom God plunged into a mystical sleep after they were walled in a cave by Pagans, there are also 7 tombs lined up next to the source, in the village of Amizmiz, which seem confirm this legend for the inhabitants as for the visitors in search of mystical stories.

The city is located under the Lalla Takarkoust dam, built between 1929 and 1935 under the name of Cavagnac dam for the irrigation of the Haouz plain and the production of electrical energy, on the wadi n'Fiss, a tributary of the 'Oued Tensift taking its source in the High Atlas and creating a reservoir of 7Km long.

The dam was raised by 9m between 1978 and 1980 to alleviate significant siltation and increase hydroelectric power production from 10 to 15 million kWh and the irrigated area from 5,000 to 9,800 hectares.

More recently, the development of sporting and artistic activities on Lake Lalla Takerkoust has contributed to the city's tourist growth.

In 2014 the population amounted to 4,080 inhabitants, many inhabitants of Marrakech have taken the habit of going there for the day to escape the great heat and bathe in the lake, where swimming is officially prohibited but motorized aquatic activities authorized such as Jet-Skiing and many others.
